Online Safety - Year 5 and 6

Dear parents and carers,

After a rise in incidents online including inappropriate and sexualised language, Mrs Clark and I hosted an assembly with Year 5 and 6 around online safety last week. We wanted to share some key messages with you about this.

  • Using platforms like Snapchat and Instagram under the age of 13 goes against their set age restrictions.
  • By allowing children on platforms, such as snapchat or Instagram, there is a risk they will be exposed to content that is not appropriate for their age.
  • Inappropriate language, such as swearing or threats, or sexualised language is not ok online.
  • As a school, we have a zero-tolerance policy around use of inappropriate language in school and if an incident arises, we will issue internal suspensions, known as a C4. This is stated in our Positive Behaviour Policy.

We have put together a leaflet for parents to support you in helping your children to stay safe online. This leaflet is attached to this letter, and is available in a range of languages which can be collected from your child’s teacher.

To support our families further, we are holding drop-in sessions about online safety in the community room during our upcoming parents’ evenings on
Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th April.

If you have any concerns about your child’s activity online, please get in touch.

Best wishes,

Mr. Trower
Deputy Headteacher
